I was a big fan of the first Mercenaries game, so I decided to take the plunge and buy the second installement in the stylized explosion laden bomb and frag fest that is World in Flames.

To start, I will agree that the A.I lacks a certain intelligence. There are times that I can walk right up to a combatant and shoot him like Dick Cheney at a pheasant fest. That said, who really cares? The enemies can kill you good if you suck, or a choose the wrong tactic. The enemy will radio in support, ranging from tanks, choppers, or more troops. Another complaint that I would half agree with is that the cities seem devoid of graphical inspiration. That is true enough. Sure, the cities do not teem with activity like GTA4. That is not really important anyway. Its all about the context. In GTA4, the city itself was a major part of the story, the better that city was rife with detail, the more it felt like you were actually in a city. The context, or point, of Mercs 2 is blowing shit up, plain and simple.

Speaking of blowing shit up, Mercs 2 delivers. This game has the best fire and explosions of any game that I have seen to date. The trees will catch fire, topple over and blow up a fuel depot, which in turn will demolish a building, etc. Everything from RPGs, grenades, C4 (my favorite) and airstikes look fantastic. Throwing an artillery strike amidst a bunch a foes, and running like hell is awesome. The vehicle and supply delivery is cool. You can tag money and fuel for pickup as you find it . The driving is easy, but it does lack the driving physics of GTA4. That would have been nice, but still doesnt detract from the fun. And did I mention that this game has mini-nukes? Daisy Cutters? Bunker Busters?

Mercs 2 incorporates alot of military vehicle types, and they are all pretty fun, especially tanks and choppers. The ability to use a grappling hook, steal and enemy chopper and blow the hell out of the VZ is exciting. You can regenerate health, adn many times I have been VERY close to death. If you make a concerted effort to get out of harms way, you usually do not die. The game goes to certain lengths to make sure that you are hard to kill, making you feel like a smart ass destructive super soldier, that loves to blow shit to hell. In the first Merc, water would kill you, like a vampire. But now you can sswim, and use quite an array of boats. The aquatic craft range from simple inflatables, jet skis, light armor fast attack boats, to large, lsow destroyer type boats.

Overall, Mercs 2 is a good, solid bit of fun. The drop in-out coop is seamless. With a friend playing, you are quite unstoppable. Nothing beats being with a buddy, dropping into a group of hositles, and blowing the ever loving hell out of everything. Its not GTA4, but then again it never was trying to be. Just some simple, good old fashoined blowing shit up.

Overall- B+

controls/camera-B+

saving/checkpoint function-A

graphics-B

story-A

voice acting/cutscenes-B+

Meh. After you're done blowing stuff up, it got boring really fast to me. It's just a rental in my book. But the commercials for it are pretty good ('Oh no you didn't!'). Almost as good as the 'Uncle Gary' ones that Saints Row 2 are putting out.

indeed. I just get so little time to play anymore, that seems fun to me. Im kinda biding my time for Fable 2. Im really looking forward to that. I will resell it on Ebay when I beat it or get bored with it. I can usually get atleast 45$ out of almost any game on Ebay.

That's a good price. And you cut out the middle man at places like GameStop.

Fianlly got it yesterday and it's a good amount of fun. Like you said: it's just blowing shit up. You don't want the story, or the graphics or any of that, you just want to adequately demolish everything you see without a problem and it seems to do that well. I still prefer the first but it will do fine as a fill in until I get ahold of Silent Hill in two weeks smile .

finished it last night myself, Ciotog, that was werid that it kept kicking you out if you jumped in a tank.......the ending felt very anti-climactic, mercs 1 had a much cooler story, but still this was a good game, defiently worth 25$ (i can get 35$ for it on Ebay

Sent it back already, got SH: Homecoming... I haven't played in three days :| . I would re rent Mercs but with Saints Row 2 and Dead Space, among other things, I will have to forgo until later, i.e: buy it dirt cheap in a few months. I wasn't overly impressed after getting into it btw, it was fun but... idk, I have been sorely disappointed with alot of sequels lately, iy makes me sad smile
